Adding Clary Sage Oil to a Deodorant You Already Like

Sweat on its own has hardly any smell. The odour people notice comes later, when bacteria living on the skin get to work on it. That is worth knowing before you add any essential oil to a deodorant, because it tells you what clary sage oil is for in that jar: a pleasant scent, not an odour fix. If you already have an unscented underarm product your skin likes and you love the sweet, dry, softly herbal smell of clary sage, the arithmetic for scenting it is short.

Odour is a bacteria story, and everyone's is different

A 2013 study that sequenced the underarm bacteria of 53 healthy volunteers found two broad types of community, one dominated by Staphylococcus and one by Corynebacterium. Women mostly fell into the first group (87% of 17), men more often into the second (39% of 36), and every person's mix was unique. Deodorant use also shifted the diversity of species in proportion to how much was used. What that suggests in practice is that no two underarms are quite alike, so a product that suits one person may do little for another, and a scent is a choice about how you want to smell, not a promise about what the bacteria will do.

That is where we land on clary sage oil here. It is a lovely fragrance note to add to a deodorant you already tolerate, and we leave it there. In the United States, whether a product counts as a cosmetic or a drug depends on its intended use, and the FDA notes that deodorants which are also antiperspirants are both at once and must meet both sets of rules. A scented oil is neither, so it belongs in the cosmetic, fragrance-only column.

Scenting a deodorant, by the numbers

We sell the oil only, so you would start from an unscented balm, stick or cream from a craft or pharmacy supplier. The Tisserand Institute gives 0.5% to 1.2% for facial cosmetics and deodorants, a range it describes as suited to the face and other sensitive spots such as the underarms. That sits comfortably inside our general 0.5% to 2% guidance for skin, so for underarms we would work at the lower end and start at 0.5%.

Here is the oil needed, using the rough convention of 20 drops to the millilitre (drops vary by dropper, so treat them as round numbers):

Amount of base0.5%1%1.2%
30 ml (1 fl oz)0.15 ml, about 3 drops0.3 ml, about 6 drops0.36 ml, about 7 drops
15 ml0.075 ml, about 1.5 drops0.15 ml, about 3 drops0.18 ml, about 3.5 drops

The half drops in the 15 ml row show why smaller batches get fiddly: no dropper delivers one and a half drops. Make 30 ml or more, or mix a stock dilution of the oil in a carrier first (our dilution guide shows how) and measure from that.

Underarm skin deserves a patch test

Underarm skin is thin, often freshly shaved and rubbed all day, so we would patch test the finished deodorant before wearing it, not just the oil. Our patch test guide walks through it. Regulators treat clary sage oil with respect too: the European Food Safety Authority's 2024 assessment, written for animal feed, says the oil should be considered an irritant to skin and eyes and a dermal and respiratory sensitiser. That is a good reason to start low, not a reason to skip the scent.

A few people should leave this one out. We advise avoiding clary sage oil during pregnancy, and an OB-GYN or midwife is the right person to ask. Skip it on a rash, broken or freshly shaved skin, and if you have reacted to fragranced products before, check with a dermatologist or allergist first. If sweating or odour is something that really bothers you, a pharmacist or dermatologist can point you to products and options designed for it.

For a fragrance in a deodorant, clary sage is a graceful, understated choice: a little goes a long way, and 0.5% is plenty to begin with. If you enjoy working out dilutions, our write-up on clary sage oil on skin covers the same logic for other leave-on products.
